Help Using the Builders' Guide Website
Searching
The Builders' Guide website utilizes a complex full-text search engine (Solr) to search the OCR text of the Builders' Guide images. There are many options you can use to get better results for your searches.
- Find any words: If you type multiple words, Solr will look for any these words on the same page.
Results that include all of the words will rank highest, but pages that include only some, or only one of
the words will still be included in the results.
Evans Furness will first show results that include both Evans and Furness in the text, and then results that include only Evans or only Furness. - Required words: Put a + sign before a word to indicate that a word is required to be found.
Evans +Furness will find all pages that have Evans and Furness, and secondly all pages that have Furness. Pages that only contain Evans will not be listed in the results. - Fuzzy matching: Solr will by default provide results similar to the search terms you provide. Words
that match more directly will be higher in the search rankings.
You can increase the fuzziness of the search by using a tilde (~) after the search term.
Furness~ will also find "furnish," which is phonologically similar. - Wildcards: You can use the question mark (?) to indicate a single character, or the asterisk (*) to
indicate multiple characters.
build? will find "build" and "builds" (and other OCR errors like "buildi" and "buildt").
build* will find "building", "buildings", and "builders".
